A Message for the World (1:1-15)

Key Idea: God’s saving grace through Jesus Christ is intended for the whole world.

Key Verse: Romans 1:5

The Crux of the Matter (1:16-17)

Key Idea: It is God who saves, by his own righteousness, all who have faith in Christ.

Key Verse: Romans 1:16-17

Everyone Needs Saving (1:18-3:20)

Key Idea: Everyone has valued creation over the Creator, failing to live up to either God’s Law and conscience, and is therefore accountable and guilty before God.

Key Verse: Romans 1:20-21

God’s Righteousness Through Faith in Jesus (3:21-31)

Key Idea: God’s own righteousness has been revealed, for all people, through faith in Jesus Christ.

Abraham: Justification by Faith Not Works (4:1-25)

Key Idea: God considers as righteous those who trust in God to justify rather than trying to earn it by works.

Gospel Hope in Suffering (5:1-11)

Key Idea: The sure hope of the gospel enables believers to persevere in the “obedience of faith” even through suffering.

Key Verse: Romans 5:2-5

Represented by an Adam (5:12-21)

Key Idea: All will be represented by either Adam unto death or by the second Adam (Jesus) unto righteousness and life.

Union with Christ: Dead to Sin, Alive to God (6:1-23)

Key Idea: Union with Christ by faith means that his death counts for us and his life is given to us and we therefore live free from slavery to sin and are increasingly obedient to God.

Belonging to the Ruler Not the Rules (7:1-25)

Key Idea: We have been set free by Christ’s death from the requirement of the Old Testament Law in order that we can instead belong to and be obedient to Christ.

Life and Love: Now and Later (Romans 8:1-39)

Key Idea: Christians can never be separated from God’s love which provides a sure hope for a new, abundant life both now and on into eternity.
