Christmas is about real events that happened in a real place to real people in real history…to solve a very real, very big problem.
Our greatest problem is the wrath of God against us for our sin.
Because God is perfectly good, God will always punish evil as it deserves.
Sin is always a personal offense against an infinite God.
We get a sense of just how serious God is about punishing sin and just how serious he is in his hatred of sin and how rightly God loves goodness and righteousness when we consider the punishment that God says is fitting for sin: namely, hell.
The angel’s news was good news of great joy because we were not left to ourselves to face God’s wrath.
“Christmas is telling you that you could never get to heaven on your own. God had to come to you.” (Timothy Keller)
The angels sing of two things: that the birth of the Savior is a the greatest revealing of God’s glory and that this same Savior will bring people to God.
Christmas is not for us if we like the Jesus story but refuse to trust the Jesus of the story.
