Who God Has Been

Prayer: God, you have been faithful.

God chose Jerusalem as a place to be present among his people.

God gave David as king over his people.

God used Solomon to build the temple.

God kept his promise to put David’s descendants on the throne of Israel.

Who God Will Be

Prayer: God, continue to be faithful.

Solomon’s varied prayer requests are all ways of saying, “God, please continue to fulfill your promises in the Mosaic covenant, especially the parts where you forgive and restore us.”

Who God Will Be Toward Us

Prayer: God, be faithful to forgive us when we repent.

Solomon asks five times that God would forgive his people.

Solomon conditions forgiveness five times on repentance.

Forgiveness without repentance is nonsense.
